Between proven and innovative – the evolution of military ship propulsion

Robustness in all its facets is a top priority for naval forces, which can, to some extent, hinder or at least slow down innovation. However, upon closer examination, naval shipbuilding proves to be highly innovative, both on a small and large scale. In this article, we will focus on propulsion systems, specifically the components of ship propulsion that generate thrust for forward motion.

Germany’s Rohde & Schwarz has been awarded a contract by the Dutch Materiel and IT Command (COMMIT), part of the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD), to supply its turnkey integrated communications system (ICS) for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNlN) and the Belgian Naval Component. The equipment will be integrated on board the two countries‘ anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates currently on order.

Officers from 51 navies who were accorded a tour of the Indian Navy’s INS Vikrant, during last February’s biennial „Milan“ (Multilateral Naval) Exercise held by the Eastern Naval Command, were deeply impressed by India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier (IAC-1).
