Vaisala’s AWS830 delivers real-time metocean data engineered for naval, coast guard, offshore and research vessel operations.
Offshore operations depend on reliable weather and sea-state intelligence. From helidecks and bridge teams to remote operations centers, safety and uptime depend on data that is always available, trusted, and easy to use. Vaisala’s Maritime Automatic Weather Station AWS830 has been designed specifically for this environment: a cybersecure, modular offshore weather station built for demanding maritime applications, including naval, coast guard, offshore, research, and icebreaking vessels.
AWS830 combines meteorological, oceanographic, environmental, and motion measurements into one integrated system for offshore vessels and installations. Typical parameters include wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, air temperature, humidity, visibility, cloud base height, and helideck motion. For more advanced needs, the system can be extended with sensors for waves, currents, and sea surface temperature, giving operators a full picture of conditions affecting helicopter flights, offshore and deck operations.
For naval defense operations, that data supports effective coordination of supply vessels, helicopters, drones, and other operational support traffic; informs early warning and safety protocols for personnel and assets; provides the accurate wind and helideck stability data vital for safe naval aviation; and gives commanders the decision-making support they need to monitor conditions and ensure safe naval operations.
Cybersecurity is built into the core of AWS830. The system is powered by Vaisala’s Data Management Unit DMU801, which uses secure boot, signed firmware, and end-to-end encrypted communication with Vaisala Elements Helideck Monitoring Software. As Mikko Nikkanen, Head of Maritime at Vaisala, has written, the system was approached „as a security appliance as much as a data logger,“ with cybersecurity implemented through defense in depth across hardware, software, communications, and lifecycle, and built on zero-trust principles where every interface must authenticate and all critical traffic must be encrypted. AWS830 also follows a secure development lifecycle aligned with IEC 62443 principles, including threat modelling and systematic security testing. This helps ensure that the data feeding navigation, aviation, and control systems is authentic and protected, even as cyber risks increase across the maritime sector.
Modularity has been a key design driver. AWS830 supports both Vaisala’s own sensor portfolio and selected third-party sensors, so it can be configured around existing infrastructure and future requirements. Users can deploy a complete helideck monitoring system using CAP437-compliant Vaisala Elements Helideck Monitoring Software, or integrate the weather station directly with ship navigation, automation, and platform control systems. As assets and regulations evolve, the system can be expanded without redesigning the entire weather setup.
Engineered for harsh offshore environments, AWS830 is available in both outdoor and server-rack versions. The outdoor unit is designed and tested for the realities of exposed on-deck installations — corrosion, vibration, shock, extreme temperatures, high humidity, and salinity — building on a field-proven track record of reliable operation in conditions as cold as minus 50°C. The server-rack option serves protected equipment rooms, enabling flexible system architectures across fleets and platforms. The system is maritime approved and compliant with relevant IEC and CAA standards, including CAP437, for Environmental and Helideck Monitoring Systems.
The value of AWS830 is measured in safer decisions and higher operational efficiency, with fewer weather-related surprises. Real-time, high-quality data supports proactive helideck and marine operations, helping crews anticipate changing conditions rather than react at the last minute. Automated diagnostics and data validation keep an eye on system health and data quality, supporting high availability and reducing unnecessary maintenance visits over the lifecycle of the asset.
